Fondation Dynasty Tang pour I’art: A Beautiful Identity is a facsimile displacement of the formal exhibition Fondation Cartier pour I‘art Contemporain: A Beautiful Elsewhere. The word “ Fondation Cartier pour l’art” was replaced by a fictional organization “Foundation Tang Dynasty pour l’art”, while in Chinese the character “代” was reserved, which can both refer to comtemporian and “唐代” a certain dynasty 1400 years ago named the same with my family name.
The content, as the subjective, was also changed from “A Beautiful Elsewhere” into “ A Beautiful Identity”. The difference here is that the artists’ names and their signified are replaced. The artists dressed up as those defined identities and re-created according to the given biography. However, the format of the exhibition remains the same: the artists’ biography, the exhibition introduction, the introduction of the works and even the visual style are the same as they were in the original exhibition.
There is a formula in curating an art exhibitions: First, the creators' names and biography are given, and then there come the further text description of their works. In such a process, the image of an 'artist' is gradually constructed, and the meaning is given to creative behavior contained in this image. It does not matter that whether the viewer has a prior knowledge of that certain artist.since in a particular exhibition, the ‘identity’ of the artists is an abstract one-sided concept that is not directly related to the artists themselves. Those are the concepts shaped and chosen by capital powers. while the particularity of the artists is dispelled as their identity goes to nothingness. As exaggeratedly emphasized in this exhibition, in the context of commercialization. what is presented to the viewers is not the original artists and the original appearance of their works.
